Could Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) endorse GOP candidate Linda McMahon over Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in the race for Connecticut’s other Senate seat? On MSNBC earlier, he refused to say one way or another.

“I’m approaching the election in Connecticut as an independent does,” Lieberman told host Andrea Mitchell. “I’m not actively leaning in any direction.”

Lieberman said he’d wait for the candidates to make their cases before deciding, then added: “I don’t believe that endorsements by political people really matter much in most elections.”

In an interview with Politico, Lieberman said of a possible McMahon endorsement: “Is it theoretically possible? Yes. I probably know Blumenthal better, but I know Linda McMahon — she was on the state board of higher education, and I met with her a couple of times in that capacity. This is the great privilege that voters of Connecticut gave me in 2006 as an independent. Wait and see.”

McMahon supported Lieberman back in 2006, when Ned Lamont successfully beat him in the Democratic primary, precipitating his flight from the party. Blumenthal backed Lamont.
