On CNN last night, Karl Rove told a little story about how he initially thought the choice of Dick Cheney for Vice President was a “bad idea,” but that then-Governor George Bush was “set” on Cheney.

Rove was on John King’s show talking about his new book, “Courage and Consequence,” and described how he tried to convince Bush that Cheney was a bad choice.

“For about 30 or 35 [minutes], I lay out the reasons why he shouldn’t pick Dick Cheney,” said Rove.

He threw out some of those reasons:

We didn’t need to worry about Wyoming’s three electoral votes, and Cheney’s voting record, and Cheney’s health, and the fact he’d been 41’s Secretary of Defense and we were trying to develop a separate image for 43, he was a Texas oil man like Bush was a Texas oil man.

At the end of his spiel, Rove recounted, Bush asked: “You got anything else?”

When Rove said no, Bush “turned to the guy next to him and said ‘Dick, you got any questions for Karl?'”

Rove added: “Cheney and I became great friends, but at the moment I thought, ‘Great, I’ve angered the guy who’s gonna be the next Vice President and he goes around heavily armed.'”
