Hindered by their midday taping time, the Daily Show had to wait until last night to comment on President Obama’s State of the Union address. Their verdict? For all the hoopla, it was pretty “eh.”

Jon Stewart opened the show by theorizing that Obama had not, as it appeared, handed a hard copy of his speech to Vice President Biden and Speaker of the House John Boehner, but rather had given them a buddy cop screenplay he thought they’d be perfect for.

“It’s called Motormouth & Waterworks,” Stewart intoned. “John Boehner is Ralph Waterworks, and Joe Biden won’t shut the fu*k up.”

Turning to the speech’s contents, Stewart primed the audience to hear the usual declarations of the nation’s strength. Yet when the show rolled clips of Obama discussing the nation’s failures and shortcomings compared to other countries, Stewart grew worried.

“Oh my God, I think this might be an intervention,” Stewart said. “Or the President’s about to ground us.”

Yet when it came to the much talked about “Sputnik” line in Obama’s speech, Stewart was underwhelmed and highly skeptical that the comparaison was so apt.

“That’s our Sputnik moment?” Stewart said. “Their Sputnik moment was ‘we have 10 years to reach the moon,’ and our Sputnik moment is ‘we have 25 years to make sure 80% of us live near somewhat faster trains?”‘
