Jon Stewart hardly needed jokes Wednesday night, instead letting clips of Newt Gingrich’s botched campaign rollout speak for themselves.
It’s been a very, very bad week for Newt Gingrich who has stumbled again and again since launching his presidential campaign last week. On Meet the Press on Sunday, Gingrich described the GOP’s Medicare plan as, “right-wing social engineering.” Republican legislators and pundits immediately dumped on him, prompting Gingrich to claim he just wasn’t prepared for all the gotcha questions on the show.
“You’ve been on that show more times than David Gregory,” Stewart said. “That’s not gonna fly, Newt, you know that. That’s a terrible excuse. Try again.”
Stewart then rolled more footage of pundits knocking Gingrich, with some indicating that he’d already destroyed his campaign. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Stewart showed how the rest of Gingrich’s week had gone, which included an event in Iowa where a local Republican called him an “embarrassment” to the party, and a book signing in Minnesota at which a gay rights activist showered him in glitter.
“And of course later that evening, his hotel turndown service consisted of a chocolate mint and a punch in the nuts. It was not a good day,” Stewart said.
