Mark Sanford: Governor, hiker…soothsayer?

The Republican Governor of South Carolina has issued a warning to the American people about health care: “It’s worth noting that today, the Fifteenth of March, is remembered as the ‘Ides of March’ — a day of reckoning and foreboding.”

In a written statement about the dangers of health care reform, Sanford invoked the expression “beware the Ides of March,” a soothsayer’s warning to Julius Caesar on March 15, the day he was murdered.

Sanford seems to think we’d be wise to learn from Caesar’s misfortunes: “In the same way, today represents a time of foreboding for our nation given the historic nature of what is taking place in Washington.”

He continued:

I believe it is a mistake both financially and medically, and that forcing this enormous health care plan on South Carolinians and Americans in general amounts to nothing less than Congressional malpractice.

Late Update: Trent Lott issues a similar warning.
