In an appearance on Top Line today, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) expressed his confidence in Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan — pending a thorough examination of her writings, speeches, and “a raft of other things.”

“She’s a very intelligent, interesting person, and I suspect she’ll do just fine,” he said. “But we’re gonna have to really scrutinize it because this is a really important position.”

Hatch went on to say that though he had no doubt as to the merits of Kagan’s resume, more information was needed regarding what kind of judge she might turn out to be.

She has a lot of qualifications. There’s no question about that. But we really know very little about her judicial philosophy. As much as she may look good initially — and I suspect she will be okay — we’ve gotta look at her judicial philosophy and make sure that she’s the type of person that should go on the supreme court.
