White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs used an interesting metaphor today to describe Republican efforts at bipartisanship: “A lot of Republicans get to church. Very few of them have made it to the altar.”

In today’s press conference, Gibbs was asked about Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who “mentioned to the President that he got the feeling that we weren’t willing to work with anybody” on regulatory reform.

Gibbs noted that Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) had attempted to work with several Republican Senators — who then backed out midway through the process.

Gibbs then said: “A lot of Republicans get to church. Very few of them have made it to the altar.”

The remark prompted a smattering of laughter and confusion from the White House Press Corps.
