Former President George W. Bush is set to endorse a candidate in a state senate race in Texas, the Fort-Worth Star Telegram reports.

The candidate, David Sibley, is running in a special election for a seat he held until 2002, and campaigning against two other Republicans in the race.

A spokeswoman for Sibley said the two will appear together at a private event in Waco next week. She added that Bush’s Crawford ranch is in the district, and that the two are “longtime friends.”

Since leaving office in January 2009, Bush has kept a low profile, showing up here and there at mostly apolitical appearances. As the Telegram points out, his parents campaigned for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison in her bid for governor, but Bush did not make an endorsement for either her or Gov. Rick Perry.

The special election is scheduled for May 8.
