RIVER FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Funeral services will be held in suburban Chicago for the young U.S. diplomat killed while delivering textbooks in southern Afghanistan.

The funeral Mass for Anne Smedinghoff will be held Wednesday morning at St. Luke Church in River Forest.

The 25-year-old Smedinghoff and four other Americans were killed while walking from a military base to a nearby school. Two explosions occurred, apparently a suicide car bombing followed by a roadside blast.

Secretary of State John Kerry stopped in Chicago on Monday to visit Smedinghoff’s parents. Before the visit, Kerry told embassy staff in Tokyo that Smedinghoff was “full of idealism and full of hopes,” in taking books to school children.

The attack that killed Smedinghoff also killed three U.S. service members, a U.S. civilian Defense Department worker and an Afghan doctor.
