This morning, Mayor Adrian Fenty signed a marriage equality bill in Washington, D.C.

In a signing ceremony at All Souls Unitarian Church, Fenty officially signed the bill legalizing gay marriage in Washington D.C. This follows the bill’s passage in the D.C. city council on December 1.

According to the The Washington Post Fenty said in his remarks that “today an era of struggle ends for thousands of D.C. residents. Our city is taking a leap forward.”

Council member Jim Graham also made remarks, and said that “from the very beginning of this discussion, there was one certainty … and that certainty was that once we passed the bill, this man would sign it. We’re here today to do just that.”

The bill will now move on to Congress for a 30-day review period.
