Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis said on the local Peter Boyles radio show this morning that if he were elected, he’d aim for the sort of tough immigration law that Gov. Jan Brewer (R-AZ) just signed into law in her state.

“I’m gonna wave the magic wand,” Boyles said. “You’re governor. What would you do?”

“I would do something very similar” to what Brewer did, McInnis said.

The immigration law in Arizona requires law enforcement officers to ask for the papers of anyone they might reasonably suspect is in the country illegally. It also makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally.

“Finallly, some governor stood up and said, ‘We’re stopping the retreating. No more retreat,'” McInnis said. “‘Federal government, if you’re not gonna do it, we’re gonna do it.'”

The issue is that government refuses to acknowledge that illegal means illegal.

McInnis also stood up for Brewer: “I know she’s catching all kinds of flak — most of it’s unfair.”

Late Update: It looks like McInnis isn’t alone. Think Progress has compiled a handy chart of several other states that are considering an Arizona-like immigration law.
