House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) had some strong words today for his Republican counterpart, after Eric Cantor (R-VA) claimed earlier that it was Democrats who are fanning the flames of violence.

“Democrats aren’t playing with this at all,” Clyburn said. “I would remind Mr. Cantor that it was his member who yelled ‘baby killer’ to Stupak, who the next morning sent out a fundraising letter trying to benefit from that effort.”

I challenge him to show me in any instance where he’s seen a Democrat do that sort of thing. We just don’t play with fire.

Clyburn also addressed the image of a noose that was faxed to his office — and suggested it was part of a coordinated effort.

“I’ve got the same fax that a lot of other people got, but with a different name on it. So this stuff is being coordinated, and I suspect, maybe from one source.”

Clyburn also called on lawmakers of both parties to work together on “tamping this stuff down” and warned Republicans that “if you play with fire, you’re bound to get burned. And I do believe, if they don’t tamp this down, they’re gonna feel the heat for it.”
