Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) issued the following statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the Senate Finance Committee’s rejection of the public option. Here’s the full text.

“While the public option may have been defeated today in the Senate Finance Committee, the fight is far from over. Four out of five congressional committees passed health reform legislation that includes a strong public option. The majority of Americans, physicians, and my colleagues in Congress support a public option.

“A vote for the public option is a vote for consumers and taxpayers. In too many parts of the county, one or two insurers control a vast majority of the health insurance market. That leaves Americans struggling to buy health care and the government and businesses struggling to pay for it. This undermines our economic competiveness. As we all work to get our economy back on track, we need to ensure competition in the insurance industry so that big HMOs can’t continue to squeeze American families and businesses. We know that a public option will reduce costs and improve medical care and access.

We can pass meaningful health reform that includes a public option. American families and businesses deserve no less.”
