BP CEO Tony Hayward is ready to acknowledge something: The Gulf Coast oil spill — which he once characterized as relatively “tiny” and which now ranks as the worst spill in U.S. history — is “clearly an environmental catastrophe.”
Hayward said on CNN this morning that the spill “is clearly an environmental catastrophe. There is no two ways about it.”
“It’s clear,” Hayward said. “It is clear that we are dealing with a very significant environmental crisis and catastrophe.”
Earlier this month, Hayward told the Guardian that “The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume.”
