Senators Evan Bayh (D-IN) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ) both said on Fox News Sunday today that White House gate crashers Michaele and Tareq Salahi ought to be punished — perhaps with criminal charges — for sneaking into a state dinner at the White House last Tuesday.

“It’s an incredible situation,” Bayh said, adding that “it’s not a laughing matter that people could get that close to the president and vice president that aren’t supposed to be there.”

Bayh compared the Salahis’ possible effect on White House security to the way shoe bomber Richard Reid changed security procedures at airports.

“This couple may change the way people go to the White House,” Bayh said, adding that he expects security in the future to be “a lot stricter than it has been.”

Kyl agreed that the book should be thrown at the Salahis.

“You have to have a strong deterrent,” the Republican senator said. “They should be in some way brought to justice.”
