In a surveillance video shot two days before John Wheeler’s body was found in a landfill, the former Republican appointee and champion of Vietnam Veterans appears disoriented and shoeless as he walks around a downtown Wilmington parking garage.

Police in Newark, Del., who are investigating what they’ve deemed a homicide, released surveillance video of Wheeler walking around the building last Wednesday, two days before his body was found in a landfill.

In the footage, Wheeler is seen in his stocking feet and carrying one shoe. He walks one way, then turns around and goes the other, stopping once to speak to someone at a desk.

The video, via the Associated Press:

The video was taken Wednesday. Wheeler’s body was found in a Wilmington landfill on Friday morning, after apparently being dumped in a Dumpster in nearby Newark. Police so far have no crime scene or suspects, but witnesses who saw Wheeler acting strangely in the days before his death have come forward.

Police say they have more surveillance footage from Thursday, when Wheeler was reportedly wandering the halls of a downtown office building. In those videos he also appears “confused,” according to police.

One police source has also said that Wheeler may be tied to an attempted arson a few days before his death at the home of a neighbor with whom he was feuding.
