Remember last year, when all eyes were on a proposed Islamic community center near Ground Zero? Protesters and politicians railed against the project, arguing that it disgraced hallowed ground.
Well, the center’s organizers are finally opening an exhibit in the space. So, what’s the Sharia-infused project in question, you ask? A photography exhibit, featuring portraits of children from around the world living in New York City.“We live in a world with far too much fear and misunderstanding,” the exhibit’s release reads. “This exhibition is about finding the courage to meet and get to know neighbors to build trust and friendship.”
Park51’s developer told the Associated Press that it will still be years before the community center’s vision is fully realized, with a mosque, health club and theater.
Park51 did not immediately return TPM’s request for further comment. The exhibit opens September 21.
