The South Carolina Republican operative whose texts to blogger Will Folks referred to an affair between Folks and gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley said this afternoon that he did not know one way or the other if there had actually been a relationship.

“I don’t know if the rumors are true,” said Wes Donehue on his Web radio show Pub Politics. “I don’t want to be in the situation I’m in.”

Donehue, you may recall, is the author of the May 14 text released by Folks today that read in part: “Your the one who screwed her. You’re the one who bragged about it.”

The campaign of Rep. Gresham Barrett (R-SC) — which Folks has accused of shopping around the story of his alleged affair with Haley — acknowledged today that Donehue “previously worked for one of our consultants.”

Donehue said today on his show: “I was drug into something I didn’t want to be drug into. It happens in politics.”

In the texts Folks released today, Folks tells Haley campaign manager Tim Pearson: “Word I hear is that wes [Donehue] is shopping an affidavit.” To which Pearson responds: “Ah. My initial thought is if it aint from you or nh then its a tough sell.”
