All but one of the auctioned artworks bore a political message, including two that implied President Obama is running afoul of the Constitution and the founding fathers.
The most pricey of the paintings, a Beck original co-painted with artist Paula Hawkins called "Truth", plays off the famous unfinished portrait of George Washington. The unfinished portrait is depicted in the top half of the frame, alongside the word "Truth." But beneath that, in a seeming inverse, Beck painted a shadowy outline of Obama alongside the word "Deceit," creating what he said was an effect akin to the Shroud of Turin.
You can view a larger image of that painting here.
The auction page describes the painting as such:
This powerful art showcases the image of President George Washington with a mirror image of the shadow of President Barack Obama. First your eyes will be drawn towards Washington's quiet look with the word Truth beside his portrait. Next you will see a light image of Obama, almost as if a shadow, positioned upside down with the word Deceit lightly etched on the side. Created in 2009 this painting will bring you back to the times of the founding of our country with colors and fonts reminiscent of the Constitution and Revolutionary America
Three other paintings, sometimes shown on Beck's television show, riff off the famous Obama "Hope" image created by street artist Shepard Fairey during the 2008 presidential election. Beck's variations use the same framing and color scheme, but depict Samuel Adams ("Faith"), Ben Franklin ("Charity"), and George Washington ("Hope.") Those paintings sold for between $9,900 and $10,100 each.
Also included in the auction was a Beck solo piece depicting a grassy field and, apparently, no political message.
This isn't the first time Beck has hawked his stuff on the Internet. Last year, he held a sort of online tag sale to auction off some odds and ends from around his house.
So chances are, if you missed you chance this time around, you'l get another crack at owning some memorabilia sometime down the road.
