The FBI says it’s reviewing why it didn’t reveal to prosecutors in the corruption case of Congressman William Jefferson that an agent on the case had an affair with a key government informant, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
And in a court filing unsealed today, first noted by the Times-Picayune, Jefferson prosecutors detail more about the FBI agent, John Guandolo, and the list of sexual conquests he wrote.
According to a footnote in this filing, Guandolo’s list of affairs, “apparently the product of marriage counseling,” contained a reference to “Lori M.” That would be Lori Mody, the government witness who wore a wire during the Jefferson corruption probe, for whom Guandolo was an undercover driver.
Another column on the list read: “Sex while on the job, Jeopardized case.” But, according to prosecutors, Guandolo’s superiors did not successfully connect the dots and learn Lori M’s identity. Only in June, when Mody came forward right before the Jefferson trial got underway, did prosecutors find out about the 2005 relationship between Guandolo and Mody.
Meanwhile, the FBI’s National Press Office yesterday told the Times-Picayune that they passed the Guandolo question on to the bureau’s Office of General Counsel for review.
And asked by the paper how his superiors obtained the affair list, Guandolo said: “It’s a lot simpler than you think.”
