The ethics committee hearings for Reps. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) and Maxine Waters (D-CA) will be held after Election Day, the committee announced today.

Rangel’s adjudicatory hearing will begin Nov. 15. Waters’ will begin Nov. 29.

The timing of the hearings was a point of contention between the Democratic and Republican members of the committee. Last week, the committee’s Republicans demanded the hearings be held before the election in a statement that apparently broke committee rules.

Rangel and Waters have both demanded their hearings begin as soon as possible.

Rangel was charged in July with 13 ethics violations regarding his taxes, disclosure forms, his use of Congressional letterhead to raise money for an educational center in his honor and his use of four rent-controlled apartments in Harlem.

Waters was charged in August with three violations related to help she gave to a California bank her husband held stock in.

A spokesman for Rangel was not immediately available for comment. A spokesman for Waters said the congresswoman is drafting a statement.
