Sen. John Ensign’s office is declining to say whether it has been subpoenaed by federal investigators probing the aftermath of the senator’s sex-and-lobbying scandal.
Asked whether Ensign or his office had received subpoenas, Rebecca Fisher, a spokeswoman for the senator, responded:
Sen. Ensign is confident he has complied with all ethics rules and laws and will cooperate with any official inquiries.
Asked again whether Ensign, a Nevada Republican, had been subpoenaed, Fisher did not immediately respond.
This comes after the NRSC — which Ensign chaired from 2007 to 2008 — told Politico that it had been subpoenaed, and after a Las Vegas news station reported that six Nevada businesses also had been.
Late Update: NRSC sends over the statement on the subpoena, from its general counsel, Sean Cairncross, which Politico reported earlier:
The NRSC has responded appropriately to questions concerning matters related to the 2008 election cycle timeframe.
And Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office has not responded to an inquiry from TPMmuckraker as to whether the GOP Senate leader continues to support Ensign.
