Despite the federal indictment against her, Leslie Johnson was sworn into office on Monday in Prince George’s County, Md. on a Bible held by her husband and alleged co-conspirator, Jack Johnson.
Leslie Johnson is accused of stuffing nearly $80,000 in cash in her bra and flushing a $100,000 check down the toilet as FBI agents knocked on the door in order to search her home as part of a corruption probe.
“It is my honor and privilege to have taken the oath and it is my honor and privilege to serve the residents of District 6 as well as wider Prince George’s County,” Leslie Johnson said. “We have already begun the hard work, and I look forward to continuing to work and serve the citizens.
“I have been elected unanimously, and that is it,” she said. “They have spoken.”
Critics had called upon Leslie Johnson to step aside to not put the county through the embarrassment of having her as an elected official.
Outgoing County Executive Jack Johnson wore his ankle monitor to the ceremony, said the Washington Examiner.
Even the woman who swore Johnson in, former councilmember Marilynn Bland, is under an ethical cloud — charged with assaulting a county employee last month.
