Apple is designing a cheaper version of its hit iPhone using less-expensive materials for the body, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, which cited unnamed sources. The report cautioned that Apple could decide not to move forward with the plan. Currently, Apple sells its older iPhone 4 for free through carriers, with a 2-year-contract.

The Journal’s article also follows rumors posted online earlier Tuesday by sporadically accurate Taiwanese news website DigiTimes, and a report last week by Deustche Securities Asia.
