WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson told Reuters this week that he recently received a message from Edward Snowden, the self-professed source of recently leaked top secret National Security Agency documents. In the message, Snowden asked for Hrafnsson’s help communicating Snowden’s desire to seek asylum in Iceland.

“On 12 June, I received a message from Edward Snowden where he asked me to notify the Icelandic government that he wanted to seek asylum in Iceland,” Hrafnsson told Reuters.

Hrafnsson also wrote about the incident in a column published in an Icelandic newspaper, according to Reuters. In the column, Hrafnsson said he had received the message via an unnamed middleman.

The Icelandic government, meanwhile, confirmed to Reuters that Hrafnsson had made contact about Snowden.

“Kristinn Hrafnsson has contacted two ministries in an informal way but not the ministers. There has been no formal approach in this matter,” a government spokesman told the news agency.
