White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Thursday said the U.S. is “seeking clarity” from the Algerian government on the current hostage situation at a natural gas field, where Americans and others are being held hostage by Islamist militants.

The U.S.’s “priority” is determining the status of the American hostages, Carney said. “We are seeking clarity from the Algerian government about this matter.” The U.S. is in “consultation” with the Algerian government, Carney added.
