The White House Council on Women and Girls will host a celebration Wednesday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark 1972 law that banned sex-discrimination in schools. The law opened the door to many women to play sports in schools that previously did not fund women’s athletics.

The event will featuring panels “that will focus on the Administration’s support for Title IX in athletics and education, led by notable women and men from the fields that have been greatly impacted by this landmark legislation,” according to the White House.

The two-hour event includes remarks from former Indiana Sen. Birch Bayh, called the “father of Title IX” for sponsoring the legislation.
