White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday that although targeting individual marijuana users wasn’t the best use of government resources, President Barack Obama does not “at this point” support a change in federal policy.

Earnest was prompted by a reporter’s question about CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta, who changed his stance on medical marijuana earlier this month. Gupta apologized for once dismissing the medical benefits of the drug.

Colorado officials told TPM Wednesday that they believe they have “tacit approval” from the Justice Department to implement voter-approved laws legalizing marijuana.

Correction: A previous version of this article quoted Earnest as saying “at this time.” We regret the error.
