“Mayors Against Illegal Guns,” the coalition co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I), ran an ad in the Washington, D.C. market during the Super Bowl on Sunday night calling for universal background checks on firearms purchases.
The ad featured a clip of the National Rifle Association’s Wayne LaPierre testifying before Congress in 1999 in which the pro-gun lobby chief called background checks “reasonable” — a sharp contrast to where the group stands on the issue today.
