Visiting Cairo on Friday, Jon Stewart made an appearance on a show hosted by a man considered his Egyptian counterpart.
“The Daily Show” host — on hiatus this summer to direct a movie — stopped by the satirical program “Al-Bernameg” for an interview with Bassem Youssef, dubbed “Egypt’s Jon Stewart.”
“Please sit down, I am a simple man who does not like to be fussed over,” Stewart told the audience in Arabic, as quoted by CBS News.
About two-and-a-half minutes into the interview, Stewart shifted to English.
“That’s all I memorized,” he said.
Youssef was investigated earlier this year for purportedly insulting Islam and the Egyptian government. Stewart commended the host’s courage.
“If your regime is not strong enough to handle a joke, then you don’t have a regime,” Stewart said.
