Elizabeth Warren expertly swatted away questions about her Native American heritage Thursday, showing that she has a good handle on how to deal with the controversy that her Republican opponent continues to attack her with. While Republicans questioned Warren’s family heritage over the last month and a half, some Democrats expressed concern that Warren’s handling of the situation showed how green she was. In an appearance on “Morning Joe,” however, Warren argued that if she didn’t have a perfectly slick response, it’s because she’s not a career politician.

“If the question is, am I professional politician who should have figured all of this out and had some slick answer to deal with it, the answer is, that’s just not me,” Warren said. “I walked into this thinking what this race would be about is how families are getting hammered and Washington is wired to work for all the big companies that can hire lobbyists, but not to work for the American people.”

Warren also turned the controversy on her opponent, Sen. Scott Brown, accusing him of wanting to talk about anything but the issues. “The bottom line is, it’s a real question about are we going to talk about issues or going to talk about other things,” Warren said. “And Scott Brown really doesn’t want to have to talk about the issues. He doesn’t want to have to talk about what’s happening to America’s families, what’s happening to families here in Massachusetts.”
