According to The New York Times, the United States has withdrawn its negotiating team from discussions with Pakistan about reopening NATO supply routes into Afghanistan. Pakistan closed the supply routes in November following the deaths of 24 Pakistani soldiers in an American airstrike.

American officials have said that the withdrawal was a practical necessity, allowing negotiations to continue at different levels between the two governments. Says an American official, “The talks have not collapsed. They have come to the point where there is no reason for them to stay because they have gone as far as they can.”
