Major General Robert Mood, the head of the United Nation’s observer mission to Syria, has said that his suspended mission is “morally obliged” to remain in the country despite the escalating violence. The mission was halted on Saturday because the safety of the observers could not be guaranteed.

Mood said that the UN’s 300 unarmed observers have been repeatedly targeted by hostile crowds and were fired upon at least 10 times last week. He added that he believes a return to full patrols will remain unlikely unless President Bashar al-Assad and pro-government forces exhibit “a demonstrable commitment to de-escalate” hostilities.
