UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay has charged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime with going out of its way to harm children as part of its crackdown on uprisings over the past year.

“They’ve gone for the children – for whatever purposes – in large numbers. Hundreds detained and tortured… it’s just horrendous,” she said.

In an interview with the BBC recorded before reports that the Syrian government had accepted a peace plan proposed by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Ms. Pillay argued that ample evidence pointed to directives from the “highest levels” of the Syrian leadership in human rights violations. She also argued that Mr. Assad should face charges over his role.
