The United States has pledged an additional $300 million in what it describes as “life-saving humanitarian assistance” to Syrian refugees, President Barack Obama announced Monday at the G8 Summit in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland.

According to a fact sheet released by the White House, the total will bring the total U.S. humanitarian assistance in the Syrian crisis to almost $815 million.

The recent decision by the U.S. to provide arms to rebels fighting in the bloody civil war has dominated the focus of this week’s G8 Summit. Before he departed for Europe on Sunday, Obama spoke to Charlie Rose about the “legitimate need” for the U.S. to be involved and engaged in the conflict.
