On Monday a Burmese court meted out a death sentence for two men found guilty of raping and killing a Buddhist woman last month. Three Muslim Rohingyas were held in custody following her death on May 28. One prisoner hanged himself during his detention.

The 27-year-old woman’s murder incited a spate of violence, leading to the deaths of over 50 people including the lynching deaths of 10 Rohingyas according to state media. According to the government, 30,000 have been displaced by the sectarian violence. Amnesty International has called on Myanmar to allow an independent investigation of the fighting. “The basic humanitarian needs of these people must be met immediately,” the group said in a statement.
