Libyan officials released a statement on Monday saying that Tunisia had extradited Al Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi, Muammar Qaddafi’s former prime minister, back to Libya. Mahmoudi had been held by Tunisia since September, when he was arrested attempting to flee to Algeria.
The extradition seems to have sparked infighting within the highest ranks of the Tunisian government, with President Moncef Marzouki denouncing the extradition, spearheaded by Islamist Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, as “illegal.” Presidential advisers say that Marzouki had not been informed of the extradition until 90 minutes after Mahmoudi had landed in Tripoli. Marzouki, along with international human rights groups, worry that Libya is incapable of offering Mahmoudi a free and fair trial.
