Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday said he wouldn’t consider choosing a Democrat as his running mate, contrary to comments from his surrogate Ben Carson.

Speaking with “Fox and Friends” via telephone, Trump discussed his potential running mate and said he wouldn’t rule out anyone other than Democrats.

“Would you rule out or rule in a Democrat — the right kind of Democrat?” co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked.

“I would rule them out,” Trump said. “Or her out.”

“Ben Carson said—” Brian Kilmeade interjected.

“I want to have a great ticket,” Trump continued. “The Democrats have been in there a long time, the economy is terrible. The real unemployment rate is probably 20 percent. Jobs are leaving. Look at Carrier, look at so many companies they’re leaving. No, I’m going to pick a great Republican. We’ll have a tremendous victory. We’re going to win.”

Trump seemed to be responding to comments Carson made Thursday to The Wall Street Journal, saying Trump would consider anyone who “put America first,” including potentially Democrats.

While Trump would not reveal his shortlist for vice presidential picks, he did respond to the crop of GOPers who recently said that they would decline the opportunity to be his running mate.

“In all fairness, I won’t embarrass them, but senators and governors, they’re saying I have decided not to accept—I never even talked to them,” Trump said.
