Donald Trump accused Hillary Clinton in a statement Monday of engaging in “false attacks” over a tweet he posted on Saturday that her campaign and others have interpreted to be anti-Semitic.

The original tweet, posted by Trump on Saturday morning, was an image labeling Clinton “corrupt” with a Star of David. Trump later posted an updated version of the image with a circle instead of a star and ultimately took down the initial tweet. But he has insisted that it was not anti-Semitic and that the star was a “Sheriff’s Star” or a “plain star.”

The Clinton campaign, meanwhile, described it as a “blatantly anti-Semitic image,” pointing to reports that the image was previously posted on a white supremacist web forum, and said it was “disturbing.”

The Trump campaign pushed back at Clinton’s response and suggested she was using it to distract from the controversy over her use of a private email server as Secretary of State. Read the full Trump statement below:

These false attacks by Hillary Clinton trying to link the Star of David with a basic star, often used by sheriffs who deal with criminals and criminal behavior, showing an inscription that says “Crooked Hillary is the most corrupt candidate ever” with anti-Semitism is ridiculous. Clinton, through her surrogates, is just trying to divert attention from the dishonest behavior of herself and her husband. The real questions are, why was Bill Clinton meeting secretly with the US Attorney General on her case and where are the 33,000 missing emails and all of the other information missing from her case – Why are there so many lies?
