Top Yahoo executive Ross Levinsohn has resigned from the company and his last day will be Tuesday, July 31, according to statements from Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer and Levinsohn himself. There was no immediate word on Levinsohn’s next step.

The move comes on the heels of former Google executive Marissa Mayer’s appointment as Yahoo’s new CEO on July 16. Levinsohn, officially Yahoo’s Executive Vice President and Head of Global Media, had served as Yahoo’s interim CEO prior to Mayer’s arrival, for nearly three months after CEO Scott Thompson resigned in May over falsified credentials on his resume. Levinsohn, the architect of several important Yahoo deals — including partnerships with ABC News, Facebook and Spotify — was thought to be the frontrunner in the permanent CEO replacement race, but was passed-up in favor of Mayer.

All Things D first reported on the news of Levinsohn’s abrupt departure, and The New York Times Dealbook obtained an email sent by Levinsohn himself to his friends and colleagues.
