Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass defected from Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime on Friday, the AP reports. Tlass was a member of Assad’s close inner circle, CBS News reports. The two men were childhood friends. According to the report, Tlass is the highest-ranking military official to defect.
