Wisconsin Republican Senate candidate Tommy Thompson told reporters Tuesday that his son feels bad about joking that voters “have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago — or Kenya” recently.

“My son feels miserable about it,” Thompson said Tuesday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “If you looked at the video, you would have seen that somebody, he said, ‘go back to Illinois,’ and somebody in the audience, if you looked at it, somebody said the other country (Kenya) and my son responded.”

“Nobody is suffering more than he is about this, and he has apologized. That is all I am going to say about it,” he added.

Thompson’s son, Jason, 38, apologized in a statement released by the Thompson campaign Monday.

Thompson told reporters that apology was plenty for him when asked if Jason should publicly and personally apologize as well.

“He has already apologized and that’s enough,” Thompson said.
