Three U.S. Naval Academy football players were formally charged Wednesday with the rape of a female midshipman at an off-campus house party in April, and for providing false statements to the police.

According to the Washington Post, the proceedings are expected to be a closely watched as a case study of how the U.S. military prosecutes sexual violence within its own ranks, something that it has come under fire for recently.

The names of the accused have not been released but will be made public at a preliminary hearing likely to take place later this summer.
