A new national poll from Congressional newspaper The Hill shows that Republican voters are starting to rate former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as a better potential standard bearer than former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney. The numbers show that Gingrich holds a fifteen point lead among GOP voters when asked who would be a better person to lead the nation.

And when it comes to the most important issue in voters’ minds for the 2012 election, Gingrich has made massive gains in the area that Romney is supposed to dominate: handling the economy. From The Hill:

Republican voters favored Gingrich by a 13-point margin (47 percent to 34 percent) when asked who would be better at improving the economy and reducing unemployment. The gap was somewhat narrower among self-identified conservatives, but Gingrich still held a 7-point edge (43 percent to 36 percent).
