Ted Cruz, who won the Republican Senate nomination in Texas on Tuesday, mentioned that he has never encountered a “Hispanic panhandler” while arguing that Hispanics are conservative people in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” From family values to high rates of participation in the military, Cruz argued that the Hispanic community is conservative. This is also why, he argued, he’s never seen a Hispanic panhandler.

Cruz recounted that a friend once asked him, “when is the last time you saw an Hispanic panhandler?” His response: Never.

“I think it’s a great question. I’ll tell you, in my life, I have never once seen an Hispanic panhandler because in our community, it would be viewed as shameful to be out on the street begging.”

This isn’t the first time Cruz has brought up this issue in order to make a point about the conservative leanings of the Hispanic community. Cruz said Romney should win over Hispanic voters by defending the conservative values of family and hard work while arguing that President Obama’s policies have hurt their community.
