Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was so close to getting on Jon Stewart’s good side.

On Thursday night’s episode of “The Daily Show,” the host plowed through clip after clip of conservatives ignoring any racial component in the death of black Staten Island man Eric Garner, who died in July after NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, who is white, put him in a chokehold. A grand jury decided not to return an indictment against Pantaleo this week.

“People continue to blame this death on anything but the injustices of a flawed system,” Stewart said.

After listening to conservatives blame Garner for resisting arrest or shift attention to his physical size, Stewart stopped when he heard Paul say there was something bigger going on.

“Thank you! Rand Paul!” he shouted, relieved. “You know, here’s a Republican who’s been making an effort to reach out to the black community… Give it to us straight, what is the larger issue here?”

In the clip, Paul went on to criticize politicians for slapping higher taxes on cigarettes and “directing” police to arrest people who sell loose cigarettes, as Garner allegedly did.

It wasn’t what Stewart was looking for.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” he said, baffled.

“Well I guess now we know what it takes to get a senator from Kentucky to admit cigarettes can kill,” the host said.
