The Supreme Court refused to step in at the last minute on Wednesday and place a temporary injunction on part of the Affordable Care Act set to go into effect Jan. 1 and that will force companies to provide contraception coverage to female employees.

Two companies challenged the provision on religious grounds and hoped the Supreme Court would put it on hold while their case worked its way through the lower courts. Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in a four-page opinion that the businesses did not meet the high-standard for a temporary injunction.
