Steve Schmidt, who managed Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008, said on Monday that he never personally saw Mitt Romney’s taxes but that they were not raised as a reason not to select him as McCain’s running mate in an interview on MSNBC’s “Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell.

“I never saw the tax returns, Lawrence,” Schmidt said. Schmidt said they would have been seen by Rick Davis, who ran McCain’s vetting operation. But he didn’t see the taxes raised as an issue, he said.

“Certainly, there was nothing as we talked about Mitt Romney seriously as a vice presidential candidate as a team. We never talked about — that there was no indications there were any problems with his taxes, but I don’t know the specifics of them.”
