A spokeswoman for the State Department repeatedly said Wednesday that the United States is not taking sides in the political crisis unfolding in Egypt as millions of protestors try to oust the democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi.

“We are not taking sides in this case,” spokesman Jen Psaki said at the department’s daily press briefing, adding that it is not enough for a leader to simply be elected at the ballot box. “He was the democratically elected president, but we have clearly called for him to do more.”

Psaki said it is not the role of the U.S. to tell Egypt what to do, but remains concerned with the violence in the country.

“We’re clearly concerned about the violence on the ground,” she said. “We are concerned especially about the violence against women.”
