The South Carolina Democratic Party is spending nearly $20,000 to air a TV ad attacking Mitt Romney in the Charlotte TV market, which covers both northern South Carolina as well as one of the largest cities in North Carolina, a state the Obama campaign is trying to win. The ad is drawing snickers from Republicans in South Carolina who point out the spot includes a mispelling of the presumptive GOP nomineee’s last name.

And here are details on the buy from The State newspaper:

It is the first time the party has paid to run ads in another state, according to Dick Harpootlian, the state party chairman. Harpootlian — a major Obama donor who was one of the few to attend the star-studded fundraiser at actor George Clooney’s home in May — said no one in the Obama campaign told him to pay for the ad.

“It was my idea, my decision, and I raised the money to do it,” Harpootlian said.

Amanda Loveday, executive director of the South Carolina Democrats, tweeted Wednesday that the version of the ad the party posted online was not the final cut and that the ad that airs on TV will have correct spelling of “Romney.”
